New Delhi, Sept 23: The Supreme Court today observed that the Union Government has prima facie bypassed the Medical Council of India in granting permission to government medical colleges in states to increase number of seats and directed the MCI to carry out inspection of all such colleges.
A division bench, comprising Justice M B Shah and Justice Ashok Bhan, directed the government that it would not grant any such further permission to the government medical colleges without following statutory provisions which make it mandatory for the MCI to first carry out inspections of these colleges. The court asked the MCI to complete inspections within four weeks.
