Dubai, June 16: In the largest ever order for wide-body jets, Dubai's international airline Emirates today announced that it has placed a massive order for 41 jets with European airplane maker airbus worth 12.5 billion dollars.
The Emirates said it had ordered 21 of the new A-380s, two A-340-500s and 18 A-340-600s.
The airlines also announced operating lease orders for 26 Boeing 777-300ers, 14 from General Electric Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) and 12 from the International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC).
The new acquisitions will provide extra capacity on existing routes and help it continue to expand its network covering 66 cities in 46 countries since services started in 1985.
"The airline was making the big purchases to meet the exceptionally strong demand from passengers and cargo customers and will fund the deals from its own reserves, from banks and institutional investors and through operating leases," Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahemd bin Saeed al Makhtoum said in a release.
Airbus chief excecutive Noel Forgeard was quoted as saying that the announcement amounted to the largest order ever for wide-body planes in terms of number and dollar value.
The Emirates' fleet is projected to swell to 125 by 2012 and the new jets will boost flights on existing routes to India, Australia, China, Pakistan and South East Asia.
