New Delhi, Aug 18: Government is giving top priority to erection of 523-km long selective fencing on the Line of Control in Poonch-Rajouri axis in Jammu and Kashmir to check infiltration from Pakistan with the Army Chief Gen N C Vij today inspecting the progress of the project. Vij on a four-day visit to the militancy hit state went round the fencing project site being build 10 km inside Indian territory and also assessed the overall security situation.
Of the proposed 523 km fencing about 223 km is in Poonch-Rajouri-Noushera -Sunderbani sector in Jammu region and the rest in the valley. In this sector, 95 km stretch of the fence in the most vulnerable Poonch-Rajouri belt is expected to be completed by middle of 2004.
During this visit, the army chief would be visitingformations deployed along the LoC for close interaction with commanders and troops to review the counter infiltration operations.
This is the Army Chief's fourth visit to the area, which has been scene of Pakistani shelling to provide cover to militants attempting to the cross the border.
