Islamabad, Oct 24: Pakistan President Pervez
Mushaaraf has said the responsibility to form a government lay
with the elected representatives and denied charges that the
military regime was working to put in place a Prime Minister
of his choice.
Promising to remain neutral, Musharraf said at a cabinet meeting last night that formation of new government was the responsibility and privilege of parliamentarians, and he would transfer power as soon as they finalised the modalities for the formation of the government. Holding that he was not responsible for the delay in the formation of the new government even a fortnight after the October 10 elections, Musharraf denied allegations that various government agencies were working to have a prime minister of his liking.
It was "absolutely wrong" to say that he wanted certain political party or an alliance to form the new government, local daily Dawn quoted Musharraf as saying today.
In his speech to the cabinet, Musharraf said he had no plan to invite politicians to discuss the future political set up of the country and pointed out that he was there to act as a facilitator and would not nominate the prime minister as many people feared.
He said he had accepted the verdict of the people and would respect the decisions of political parties on the formation of the new government.
