New Delhi, Oct 18: The Supreme Court today admitted
a petition filed by NGO common cause seeking a directive for
banning all anti-scientific rituals practised in many states
posing danger to human lives.
A bench Comprising Chief Justice V N Khare and Justice S
B Sinha admitted the appeal after senior advocate Ashwini
Kumar, appearing for the petitioner, contended that the Chief
Secretary of every state should be made accountable for
banning all such inhuman rituals.
The petition was filed immediately after the horrible
practice of burying a child alive for few hours in Tamil Nadu
was highlighted by the electronic and print media seeking ban
on such a ritual.
The Tamil Nadu government, taking swift action, had enacted a law prohibiting the child burying ritual last year itself. Kumar contended that such unscientific rituals not only pose danger to the human beings but also were a gross violation of their fundamental right to life and liberty.
