CBI has said it has not so far found any link between the Rs 64 crore Bofors payoffs case and the alleged kickbacks paid in the Rs 420 crore HDW submarine deal between India and a German firm.
“So far, we have not found any linkages between HDW submarine deal and the Bofors gun payoffs case,” CBI special director P C Sharma told reporters. He said a petition on HDW submarine deal case was pending before the Delhi High Court where the investigating agency has been submitting status reports about the probe conducted in Switzerland and Germany by the authorities there. In March 1986, India had signed an agreement with A B Bofors of Sweden to supply 400 155mm howitzer field guns at a cost of Rs 1437 crores. CBI had alleged that Bofors had paid Rs 64 crore as kickback to clinch the deal.
CBI had registered a case in March 1990 alleging that at east seven per cent commission was paid to middlemen in the Rs 420 crore deal signed between Indian government and the German company HDW for acquisition of two advanced submarines. Bureau Report
