Vladimir Smortchkov of Russia lifted 198 kilograms (435.6 pounds) to set a new world record in the snatch at the world weightlifting championships on Saturday.
Smortchkov, who was ranked in the lower of two 105 kilogram (231 pound) men's weightlifting brackets, broke the world standard of 197.5 kilograms (434.5 pounds) that the International Weightlifting Federation established in 1998, when it shuffled its weight categories.
The record remained without a holder until Smorthchkov's lift.
Competitions in the men's 105 kilogram weight class will resume later Saturday. Bureau Report
