Lucknow, June 12: Terming media reports that Archaelogical Survey of India's (ASI) latest progress report negated the claim that a temple pre-existed the demolished Babri Masjid at the disputed site as "incorrect" and mere conjectures, the Sunni Central Waqf Board (SCWB) counsel Zafaryab Jilani today said that the ASI had not drawn any such "inference". The ASI has merely submitted a progress report to the high court in which it has stated about the excavation work in the last two weeks in 30 new trenches, Jilani said.

He said according to the ASI report no anomalies, as pointed out by Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey report prepared by the Tojo Vikas International, were detected in 15 trenches.

Anomalies were, however, detected in eight trenches', he said adding the ASI had said in its report that it could not reach the level pointed out by the Tojo International in five trenches, while no excavation work was undertaken in one trench.

The ASI had been directed by the high court to submit its final report by June 30 next, Jilani said.

He said the ASI had not drawn any conclusion as to the existence of a temple prior to the demolition of the Babri mosque in its report.

This is a matter which could only be decided by the court, he said.

Jilani said the board was studying the report' and would decide about filing objections, if any, shortly.

He said a team of archaeologists engaged by the board were also examining the archaeological evidence being found at the acquired land during excavation.
