Udupi, June 21: Sri Vishwesha Thirtha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt today demanded that the temples run by society, trusts and managed by hindu religion denominations should be exempted from the review of the New Hindu religion institution and charitable endowment act 1997. Most of the temples run by societies and trusts were functioning well without any scope for malpractice, the Swamiji said, adding the government "should not interfere in such well-functioning temples."

Government should intervene only where there are instances of mismanagement or malpractice, he told reporters.

He said that the government should also give full freedom to the mutts which have been excluded from the act. However, there should be some "limited control" by the government on the mutt to prevent misuse of mutt property, he pointed out.
The government should also garner public opinion before bringing in the act, the seer said.

Replying to a query, he said the Sri Krishna Temple here could not be brought under the new act as it was attached and managed by eight mutts.

Allaying apprehensions, the seer said since centuries, the temple administration was well-managed by the eight mutt heads, through a rotation process.
