Lucknow, May 03: The inner contradictions plaguing the BJP over continuing its alliance with the BSP came to the fore when a senior BJP leader and minister for irrigation Om Prakash Singh accused the state party leadership of failing to take advantage of the alliance. Singh said that today the party could not benefit from the alliance owing to the "negative attitude" of the state BJP leaders. Singh's statement assumes significance in the wake of speculation over possible return to BJP of former chief minister Kalyan Singh, a staunch opponent of Mayawati, as it would virtually mean severing of the party's tie-up with the BSP. While expressing disagreement with the assertions that the alliance with the BSP had adversely affected the prospects of the BJP in the state, Singh said that the party suffered more from the conflicting postures adopted by the two parties on a number of issues.
The central leadership of the party had decided to forge alliance with the BSP as it was inevitable, he said. The party would gain if it went for Lok Sabha polls in alliance with BSP, he added. Defending Mayawati, Singh said that while promoting her party's agenda, she also initiated several steps that promoted the BJP's agenda.
Singh said that the law completely banning cow slaughter was enacted during Mayawati's tenure making Uttar Pradesh the first state in the country to have such a law.

"We, instead of propagating that BJP has succeeded in making Mayawati toe its line, indulged in issues which were not directly related to BJP," Singh asserted adding that in doing so, in fact, we helped the opposition. Apparently referring to the former chief minister and BJP national general secretary Rajnath Singh's comments on the action taken against the Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav over the use of the discretionary fund, Singh said that the BJP should not have been bothered about actions against the SP.
Singh refused to comment when asked about the return of Kalyan Singh to the BJP fold saying that "everything was in the air at present". Bureau Report
