Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, a seasoned politician with RSS background, was on Monday elected leader of the BJP legislature party in Uttaranchal and will be sworn in as Chief Minister on Monday. Fifty nine-year-old Koshiyari will be the second Chief Minister of the newly formed hill state replacing Nityanand Swami, who was asked to quit ahead of the Assembly elctions early next year.
Swami proposed Koshiyari's name and finance minister Ramesh Pokhariyal 'Nishank' seconded it at the crucial Legislature Party meeting convened at the instance of the BJP high command to elect the new leader.
Former BJP President and in charge of party affairs in Uttaranchal, Kushbhau Thakre told reporters that no other name was discussed during the hour-long meeting in which Swami aired his views on discipline in the party. Koshiyari's election was a very smooth affair held in cordial atmosphere with all party MLAs raising their hands in his support.
When asked what prompted the BJP central leadership to effect change of guard in the state, Thakre said it is being done in the interest of the state, country and the party.
BJP has 23 MLAs in the 30-member interim Assembly.
Earlier, making an announcement in the State Assembly, Swami said he was resigning on his own will and claimed his government had put the new state on a firm footing.
