Jakarta, Sept 07: A ferry boat travelling from Indonesia's Bali Island sank early today, killing at least six people and injuring six others, news reports said. About 150 people were rescued by fishing boats after the Wirmala Dharma ferry sank on its way to Lombok Island in eastern Indonesia, a private radio station reported.
Five adults and one baby died in the accident, state news agency said. An estimated 200 people were aboard the ship when it sank at about 3:45 am, two hours into a night crossing from Bali's Padangbai port, said the report. The status of the remaining passengers was not immediately clear.
Boat accidents are common in Indonesia, an archipelago where safety rules are poorly enforced and rescue vessels are often unavailable. The cause of the accident was being investigated. Bureau Report
