Washington, Jan 08: Sri Lanka is confident that it would be able to overcome the problem of terrorism and deal with the underlying issues such as ethnic discrimination with help from neighbouring countries. Terrorism is a global threat regardless of regional or religious backgrounds and countering it must also be international, Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US Devind R. Subasinghe has said.
Sri Lanka has paid a heavy price as a result of terrorism. More than 65,000 people – combatants and civilians -- have perished, he said urging the need to implement the UN conventions on terrorism.
"The forces of globalization have facilitated the mobility of terrorists and their ability to acquire arms. He compared global terrorism to a balloon. You press it in one place and it bulges out in another. If countered effectively in one country, it emerges in another," he said at a seminar yesterday. Bureau Report
