Mumbai, Nov 09: The Karnataka Power Development Corporation has proposed the setting up of a coal-based 500 MW power plant jointly with the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) at Bellary in Karnataka. "Karnataka has proposed to the MSEB to jointly set up a 250x2 mw power plant in that state with coal supplies from Vidarbha area of Maharashtra for power generation," MSEB chairman Asoke Basak told here today.

"We have sought for more details of the joint project," he said adding, such a plant would require about one million tonnes of coal per annum.

Basak said Maharashtra would add about 1,595 MW of power by 2006 which includes 450 MW through projects in the state and 1,145 MW by central sector. "Work has started on the 250 MW new Parli thermal project and the work for Paras extension thermal project will start by February," he said.

Maharashtra would get its share of nearly 319 MW from the Sipat-11, 326 MW from Vindhyachal III and 100 MW from Kalhadgaon, he said adding, 396 MW share in Sipat I which the state has declined in anticipation of power from the non-starter Dabhol project is also likely to come its way.

Maharashtra is also likely to receive 319 MW power from the Sardar Sarovar and 468 MW from Tarapore projects while there are several proposals for supply of power from various parties.

Chhattisgarh has offered 500 mw with attractive tariffs and the state government is considering it along with a similar proposal from Jindal, he said. The government also has a proposal from Reliance to set up 3,000 MW power plant and from Tata power company for 2,000 MW project, Basak added.
