Sept 06: The United States mounted a stirring fightback to move into a 7-5 lead over Great Britain and Ireland after day one of the Walker Cup at Ganton.
Great Britain and Ireland's bid for a historic third straight win in the competition got off to a flying start as they took a 3-1 advantage with victory in all but one of the morning's foursomes.
But Bill Haas, whose father and uncle both won the Walker Cup, led the comeback with victory over Gary Wolstenholme in the opening singles match.

And the US went on to register four more wins, two halves and just one defeat to move ahead.
Haas, the 21-year-old son of 1975 winner Jay and nephew of 1985 winner Jerry, had already teamed up with Trip Kuehne for a 2&1 victory over Wolstenholme and Michael Skelton in the first of the foursomes.
But Britain and Ireland won the next three as they looked to add to their victories in 1999 and 2001.
Watched by his father, uncle and mother Pam from the other side of the ropes, Haas then went two up on Wolstenholme after four holes in the matchplay format, but trailed by two going to the 13th.

Three birdies in a row from 13 brought Haas back to all square with three holes to play and Wolstenholme missed a four-foot putt for bogey at 16 to seal his fate.
