Lions flanker Martyn Williams came off the bench to drop a goal and score a try as Wales defeated Tonga 27-20 in their World Cup pool D match in Canberra, Australia on Sunday (October 19). After an early exchange of penalties, Wales scrumhalf Gareth Cooper darted around the blindside to score the first try of the match. Flyhalf Pierre Hola replied with a try for Tonga for the teams to go into the interval with Wales leading 14-10. Following a penalty by Stephen Jones, Williams drop-kicked an unexpected goal then scored a try. Tongan number eight Benhur Kivalu and prop Heamani Lavaka kept their side in touch with second half tries and with better goal kicking from Hola, Tonga could have won.
