Mumbai, June 12: An inquiry has been set up to probe the failure of MTNL’s cellular network in Mumbai on June 4, due to malfunctioning of the mobile switching centre's operating software. Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology, Ashok Pradhan, on his first visit to Mumbai after assuming charge, was "briefed" about the failure, MTNL said in a release here on Wednesday.
MTNL's cellular services were inaccessible from 11:15 am on June 4, with both its post-paid (Dolphin) and pre-paid (Trump) services collapsing for the rest of the day. The technical snag was rectified the next day.
On MTNL services, the minister was informed that the tele density had reached 18.86 as against an all India average of 5.1 and it has plans for cellular mobile and CDMA mobile growth by four lakh lines each during this year.
MTNL is the biggest telecom district in the country with a total working connections of 26.5 lakh as on April 1 last.
