Leh, Sept 15: World famous trans-Himalayan land of myriad culture, heritage and religious wonders, Ladakh has attracted a record number of tourists, highest in the last 55 years with 600 percent increase this year. "Ladakh has beaten all previous records. About 36,806 tourists, more than half of them foreigners, have visited the cold desert region of Jammu and Kashmir during the last eight months," state tourism officials said here.
Alone in fortnight-long 'Hemis' (Ladakh) festival depicting mask dance, tantrik education and display of Tibetan and Ladakhi art works and jewellery unique in the world over, 16000 tourists, 70 per cent of them foreigners, have thronged Ladakh in September, they said. The land of lamas and gompas have broken tourists arrival record of 1988, when 24864 tourists, including 16256 foreigners, had visited Ladakh, they said.
"Currently there is flood of tourists, particularly foreigners, and we expect that it will cross 50 thousand mark this year to create all time high record in Ladakh this year," they said.
A Germany-based couple, Henry Aole and Dimmy, who were on a visit to the place said, "We come here to study influence of nature here. We feel god lives in this beautiful place."
Like them, another Canadian couple, Silvister and Isabel, feel a mixture of spirituality, people and land together here. "We feel as if in heaven here," they said and added it is our fourth visit to Ladakh.
