Chennai, Nov 17 : Inspired by the Guruvayur Temple declaring a holiday for the temple elephants, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had declared a holiday for all temple and other elephants under private institutions in Tamil Nadu to have a month-long holiday at a health camp in Mudumalai forest.
That holiday began on Sunday morning at Teppakkadu rest camp in Udhagamandalam district, organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment department.

Jayalalithaa's love for animals is not new. She has often campaigned against using elephants to collect alms. Coming to power, she has banned the sacrifices of animals. She loves her dogs and have spoken about them affectionately during her interviews. Last year she had donated an elephant to the Guruvayur temple.
Therefore, it was no surprise when Jayalalithaa declared a holiday for the pachyderm community captive, in the civilised society.
But, even she would not have comprehended the trouble and agony the gentle animals underwent the last 10 days to reach the health camps.
