Baghdad, Nov 25: The Iraqi interim leadership
said today it has sent to the United Nations a copy of an
agreement it signed with the US-led coalition on the transfer
of sovereignty to Iraqis.
"I called (UN Secretary General Kofi) Annan on the
telephone and briefed him on the agreement signed with the
coalition and asked him to keep a copy in the records of the
United Nations," the current head of the Iraqi governing
council, Jalal Talabani, told a press conference.
The agreement, signed on November 15 by alabani and the US overseer in Iraq, Paul Bremer, provides for the handover of political power from the coalition to a transitional government by the end of June, while keeping US-led forces in the country for security purposes.
It outlines a process that should be completed by the end of 2005 with the formation of an elected government.
