Baghdad, Sept 14: Seventy-five US soldiers have been killed by forces loyal to ousted President Saddam Hussein or foreign militants since an end to major combat operations was declared in May, the US military said today. Including today's casualties, a further 667 troops have been wounded in action, while another 98 troops have died through accidents or in non-combat related deaths.

Another 138 were killed during the invasion of Iraq, which began on March 20 and officially ended with US President George W Bush's triumphant May 1 speech on board the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln. Since then, the US Army has borne the brunt of the attacks with 71 killed by forces opposed to US occupation. Another two marines, one navy and one air force personnel have also died in action.

A further 50 British troops died in the invasion and the aftermath of the post-war period where the forces have faced almost daily attacks.
