Beijing, June 18: Ahead of Prime Minister Atal Bihari
Vajpayee`s China visit, an expert on South Asian relations has
suggested that Beijing maintain "transparency" in its military
ties with Islamabad to address India`s concerns and
internationally project itself as a "responsible" power.
"China should make the cooperation with Pakistan,
especially in the military field, more transparent so as to
reduce India`s suspicion", Sun Shihai, deputy director of the
institute of Asia-Pacific studies under the Chinese academy of
social sciences said.
On New Delhi`s "misperceptions" on military links between Beijing and Islamabad, Sun said: "Although China has often denied transferring of nuclear and missile technology to Pakistan, India still does not believe this".
However, he stressed that no clandestine missile or nuclear transfers had taken place between China and Pakistan.
"China wants to be seen as a responsible country in the international arena", he said, adding that clandestine transfer of defence technology would sully Beijing`s image.
More open and transparent policy on military exchanges between China and Pakistan may help reduce mistrust and misperceptions of India, Sun, a member of the India-China eminent persons group said.
On media reports that China may settle the Sikkim issue with India during the Vajpayee visit, Sun said Bejing`s acceptance of "reality" would improve bilateral relations.
"It is better for China to the realise the reality. For the strategic relations, China should recognise Sikkim as part of India", he said.
