Kolkata, Feb 05: India is striving to come out with a policy to bring in much more transparency and efficiency in movement of export documents, Union minister of commerce and industry Arun Jaitley said today even as he virtually agreed that implementation of the promised labour reforms was not practical right now. Commenting on the demand of the industry for changing laws relating to labour at the 'pre-exim policy open house meet" organised by federation of Indian export organisations here, he said, "these meaningful suggestions (on implementation of labour reforms) are easier to make, but difficult to implement in view of political considerations."
"We cannot change the mindset through legislations. Only if society thinks that such changes in labour reforms are required then only it will automatically change. Basic changes required is to get into a situation where economic compulsions will rule over political compulsions," he said.
"The most labour friendly regime would be one which would not only preserve existing jobs, but also generate new jobs. This is one area which cannot be changed only by legislations and a lot of change in mindset is required," Jaitley said.
Jaitley, during his first interaction with the representatives of trade and industry after assuming charge, said, "one of the objectives of the government was to come out with a policy where there is more transparency and efficiency to benefit the exporters."
He said government was also working in the direction of reducing transaction cost and providing access to cost competitive inputs to the exporters. Bureau Report
