Manila, May 28: Tropical storm 'linfa' bore down on Japan's southern islands today after killing at least 10 people in the Philippines, officials said. Ten people drowned, were crushed to death or electrocuted as 'linfa' cut across the northern section of the main Philippine Island of Luzon yesterday, civil defence office administrator Melchor Rosales said on government radio.
"Two other human corpses were fished out of Manila bay this morning, but we still don't know if they were killed by the storm," Rosales said. "Officially, the death toll is 10." Linfa roared out on the Pacific coast before dawn today and headed northeast in the general direction of Okinawa in southern Japan, the weather bureau said.
At 10:00 am (0730 IST), the eye of the storm was 240 kilometres northeast of Aparri town on the northern tip of Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometres an hour and gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour. It would be about 480 kilometres southwest of Okinawa bay tomorrow morning, it added. Bureau Report
