Hyderabad, June 25: Five farmers were injured, two of them seriously, allegedly when police opened fire to disperse a mob that attacked a police station in Ranga Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh today.
The farmers were enraged over policemen for allegedly beating up a farmer at a market yard in the name of enforcing discipline during distribution of subsidised seeds, police said here. The trouble started when a large number of farmers, gathered at a government-run market yard in Chevella town, grew restive after a long wait in the queue as there was delay in supply of seeds.
As the word went around that seeds ran out of stock, there was commotion in the crowd resulting in a stampede, police said.

In a bid to control the surging crowds, a constable on duty resorted to mild lathicharge resulting in injuries to one of the farmers.

Angered over this, farmers proceeded to local police station and staged a Dharna which soon turned violent with some pelting stones at policemen, injuring one of the constables.
The police first fired shots in the air to bring the situation under control. As the mob started attacking the police station, police opened fire injuring five farmers, police said.
