Jan 13: Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel won the 11th stage of the Dakar Rally to extend his lead in the overall standings.

Peterhansel clocked a time of three hours, 32 minutes and 53 seconds in his Mitsubishi, 90 seconds ahead of compatriot Luc Alphand.

The competitors drove cautiously over the 438km timed stage from Sarir in Libya to Siwa in Egypt after French co-driver Bruno Cauvy died in a crash during Saturday's 10th stage. But there was further incident when a vehicle taking part in the truck race lost a wheel after an explosion on the border between Egypt and Libya.

The driver and two passengers were unhurt, but Egyptian authorities closed the section to competitors to remove the vehicle and secure the area.
Meanwhile, British motorcyclist Patsy Quick was taken to hospital with a suspected ruptured spleen after crashing.
