Chandigarh, Sept 11: Six farmers' organisations today met Punjab Governor O P Verma and apprised him of the problems faced by them due to "non-fulfillment" of the promises made by the state government and urged him to intervene in the matter, failing which they would "fight" for their just demands. Submitting a memorandum to the governor in this regard, they alleged that the Punjab government had backed out of the agreed demands in march last.

They appealed to the governor to intervene and stop the situation from getting "volatile" as the farmers are determined to fight for their just demands, All India Kirti Kisan Sabha chief Prem Singh Bhangu said. Verma assured the farmers that he would sympathetically consider their demands.

Later, at an emergency meeting, the farmers organisation contested the statement of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh that he has considered the majority of the farmers' demands.

They also took exception to his statement that there will be no negotiations with farmers, Bhangu said adding this kind of "provoking attitude" of the government could lead to confrontation. The Chief Minister had yesterday ruled out negotiations with farmers on their demands, including free canal water and electricity, saying they were unnecessarily raking up issues.
