New Delhi, Nov 17: The Election Commission today directed the Chief Secretary to Chhattisgarh government to transfer forthwith collectors of Bastar and Jashpur in the
wake of high court vacating the stay of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).
The directive was given by Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh during a meeting with senior officials of the poll-bound state to review the law and order situation
particularly in the naxal-affected Bastar region, EC sources said.
The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary, Chief Electoral Officer, DGP and senior officers from the defence ministry. The CAT order came in the wake of a petition by Bastar collector L N Suryawansi and Jashpur collector B S Anant challenging the EC's October 29 directive, ordering their transfer from the posts for violating the model code of conduct in force for the December 01 assembly election.
The meeting discussed among other things ensuring availability of polling personnel at various polling stations and airlifting them to sensitive areas to ensure free and fair polls, K K Chakravarty, Chief Electoral Officer, told reporters after a hour-long meeting.
Noting about 7,000 additional police personnel from outside would be deployed for the poll duties, he said adding insurance cover would be provided for the polling staff. To a question on CEC's comments that Chhattisgarh was worse than Gujarat, he said this could be about individual cases and not the state as a whole.
