Colombo, Mar 15: The renegade eastern leader of the tamil tiger rebel, Karuna, is reported to have established contacts with President Chandrika Kumaratunga . Before Karuna announced his decision to breakaway from the LTTE on March 4 , he established links with Kumaaratunga’s United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
The LTTE sources in the eastern province had also confirmed that Ratna Gamage had been in constant touch with Karuna and had served as facilitator between Karuna and President Kumaratunga, who arbitrarily took over the Ministry of Defence in November last year.
It was after discussion he had with Gamage that the expelled rebel leader has expressed his desire to sign a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with President Kumaratunga, who is also the Commander In Chief of the armed forces.
However, President Kumaratunga and her senior advisor Lakshman Kadirgamar had decided not to entertain Karuna's views on the grounds that it was too premature to commit themselves to enter into a pact with the LTTE's eastern faction.
The leadership said although the government or the military has not gone into any formal agreement with the renegade rebel leader, the organisation has received reliable information indicating that Karuna was receiving assistance from some sections of the Sri Lankan military . Bureau Report
