Washington, Jan 10: U S Secretary of State Colin Powell has criticised the Israelis for erecting a security fence while insisting that Palestinians should do more on the security side "so that we can get moving on the roadmap" towards a two-state solution. Speaking on the obligations of Israelis, he said, "we have made it clear to the Israeli side that we have problems with the fence, with the wall, or whatever one chooses to call it. And we are in discussions with the Israelis as to the route that the fence will be taking over time because we understand the concerns on the Arab side."
Powell, who was addressing a predominantly Arab audience on Abu Dhabi TV, reaffirmed us support to a two-state solution, which America feels is the only one to work.
He rejected Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qorei's call for a bi-national state. Analysts point out that in a binational state, the Arab population, which has a much higher birth rate than Jews, will soon become a majority in Israel and Jews will be in a minority.
On Iraq, Powell reiterated the US policy of preventing the break-up of the country into constituent parts (Kurdish, Shiite and Sunni). "It has to be one nation," he said.
