Balurghat (WB), Nov 08: A three-day 24-hour ‘Baul Sangeet Mela’ is on at Chakbrighu in West Bengal's South 24 Dinajpur district in which hundreds of baul singers from both sides of the border are participating. The bauls are itinerant singers whose themes are mainly philosophy and spirituality in daily life.

About 300 baul singers from West Bengal and Bangladesh are participating in the Sangeet Mela. The highlight of the programme would be santhal and oraon tribals of the areas, who are adopting the baul songs.

They would perform in the sammelan, Tarini Sen Mohanta, secretary of the West Bengal Baul-Fakir Samhati Sangha. The ‘Baul Sangeet Mela’ began yesterday under the aegis of the sangha in the memory of the noted exponent late Nripendra Nath ghosh, popularly known as Kheru Ghosh.

Kheru Ghosh, a baul singer of Akashvani Rajshahi Centre in 1940s had settled here after the partition of the country in 1947. Later he was a regular singer of Siliguri Akashvani Centre in the 1970s.

Mohanta said out of 175 permanent baul centres in North Bengal, South Dinajpur district alone has around 80 of them which are engaged in promoting baul songs in the region. Bureau Report
