Shanghai, Nov 14: The navies of India and China are all set to hold the first-ever joint exercise off the coast of Shanghai today, signalling a new phase in bilateral ties, especially military-to-military ties which were nearly frozen in the aftermath of the 1998 Indian nuclear tests.
"Everything is in place for the holding of the first joint exercise off the coast of Shanghai tomorrow," the flag officer commanding of the Eastern Command of the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral O P Bansal told here.
Bansal said the two Indian warships -- INS Ranjit, a guided-missile destroyer and INS Kulish, a guided-missile corvette would set off from the Shanghai port to the south China Sea and hold three-and-a-half hours of 'search and rescue' exercise.
INS Jyoti, a replenishment tanker would not be part of the exercise. This would involve a simulated emergency situation on ships of both sides and rescue efforts that would also involve the use of helicopters.
"We have finalised all plans and are confident of holding a successful search and rescue exercise with our Chinese counterparts, which I think would be a great step forward in our efforts to enhance mutual trust and understanding," the Flag Officer Commanding of the Eastern Fleet, Rear Admiral R P Suthan said.
