Imphal, Nov 23: United Committee of Manipur (UCM) today appealed to the state government to take adequate measures to prevent violence in the state as any Biharis and Hindi-speaking people were heading towards Manipur, as a fallout of the Assam incidents. Official sources, however, said so far no Bihari or any Hindi-speaking person had entered Manipur from Assam.

Expressing concern over the recent attacks on Assamese passengers in Bihar and its fallout in Assam, a UCM statement said the government should contact neighbouring states to prevent any kind of violence. The statement said if there was large scale influx of people, it would cause serious repercussions in a sensitive state like Manipur.

Stressing the need to maintain peaceful coexistence among different sections, the Manipur body said in a multi-ethnic country like India every community should have respect for each other.

The statement said the UCM had also urged the Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh to initiate steps for introduction of inner line permit system to protect interests of smaller communities in the state. Bureau Report
