Washington, May 02: The US state department has warned US citizens against non-essential travel in Saudi Arabia, citing intelligence that terrorist groups may be in the "final phases" of planning attacks against the American community there.
The warning following the yesterday shooting of an American working at a Saudi naval base, and a similar warning issued by the US embassy in Riyadh on Wednesday.
"There is no information regarding the possible target" of the planning, said the state department bulletin.
"Non-emergency personnel and family members of the US embassy and consulates in Saudi Arabia continue to be authorised to depart. ..On a voluntary basis," it said.
"Private citizens currently in Saudi Arabia should evaluate their own security situations and should consider departing."

About 30,000 to 40,000 Americans live and work in Saudi Arabia, down from more than 60,000 a decade ago.

The bulletin from the Riyadh embassy said potential targets included facilities where US citizens and other foreigners congregate, such as residential areas, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels, outdoor recreation events or resorts and beaches.
