Sonipat, May 02: The Haryana government has decided to construct a new canal between Munak (Karnal district) and Delhi (Hyderpur waterworks) in a bid to meet the drinking water requirements of Delhi and southern parts of the state. Delhi government has already provided Rs 30 crore out of a total cost of Rs 300 crore for the construction of the new canal, official sources said.

The government has decided to construct this canal with concrete materials in order to check the seepage of the canal water. This will increase the capacity of the canal and check cases of theft, the sources said. Haryana Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala and his Delhi counterpart Sheila Dixit will jointly lay the foundation stone of the project at Binjhol near Panipat on May 4.

After receiving the first installment of the amount from the Delhi government, officials of the irrigation department have already started the construction work of an aqua duct near Garhibala village. The construction work is in progress on the diversion drain no 8 which will enable the new canal to pass through it. Officials of the Central Water Commission had inspected the work twice in recent months and expressed their satisfaction at the pace and quality of the work.
