Srinagar, Nov 03: Jammu and Kashmir government has said it will take up with the Centre the issue of imposition of anti-dumping duty on saffron imports from Iran to protect the interests of the farmers of the state. "We will take up with the Centre the matter of imposing anti-dumping duty on saffron imported from Iran, J&K Agriculture Minister Abdul Aziz Zargar said at a two-day saffron mela at Pampore, near here, yesterday.

He asked saffron growers to adopt modern technologies to increase production. The quality of saffron from Kashmir was much better than that of Iran and Spain, he said adding government will activate law enforcement agencies to ensure quality control.

Unscrupulous elements indulging in saffron adulteration and misusing the Kashmir brand will be punished severely, Zargar said.

He said saffron exporters from the state will have to get their consignments certified by the quality control laboratory of the agriculture department. All possibilities would be explored to set up a terminal saffron market in Pampore on the pattern of fruit markets to eliminate exploitation of small and marginal farmers, he said.

He underlined the need for advanced research to improve saffron production, and said a committee would be set up to oversee implementation of various saffron promotion measures, including provision of irrigation facilities.
