Bhopal, Oct 31: Former Madhya Pradesh Congress general secretary Inder Prajapat was today convicted by a court here on the charge of attempting to kill his party colleague Manak Agarwal but the punishment would be pronounced on November 05. Holding Prajapat guilty of trying to murder Agarwal on July 29, 2001 by opening fire on him, Additional Sessions Judge Abhay Kumar fixed November 05 for pronouncement of punishment sentence.

The accused, now on bail after spending about two years in jail, was not present in the court when the verdict was delivered and his counsel said Prajapat was undergoing treatment in Apollo Hospital in Indore for some cardiac ailment. According to the prosecution, irked by certain reports about his second wife, Prajapat had rushed to the house of Agarwal, also a former state Congress general secretary, in the morning of July 29, 2001 and opened fire on him from his pistol when the latter was plucking flowers in the garden.

Prajapat, who suspected Agarwal of being instrumental in getting the reports published, later surrendered to the police thinking the senior party leader was killed by his bullets.

Agarwal, now chairman of the state Small Scale Industries Corporation, however survived the attack and recovered after month-long treatment here as also in Mumbai. When contacted on phone, Prajapat said he would move the high court against the judgement.
