Jalandhar, May 14: BSF jawans shot dead nine intruders and apprehended 141 people along the Indo-Pak border in Punjab last year, but infiltration was "very low" because of appropriate fencing and heavy deployment of army and BSF, a senior official of the paramilitary force said today. BSF also unearthed a tunnel in Ferozepur sector and seized one AK 47 rifle, 18 pistols, 34 magazines and huge quantity of ammunition in Amritsar sector last year, BSF IGP (Punjab frontier) S N Jain told a press conference on the completion of his posting here.
He has been transferred to Rajasthan. G S gill, an IPS officer of Himachal cadre and presently IGP of BSF's Srinagar sector, will take over charge here from Jain. Jain said infiltration was low because BSF had plugged all gaps in border fencing created by floods and erected specially designed high beam lights near all riverine gaps.
Asked about reported increase in minority population in Punjab villages, Jain said while there was no such trend in villages along the borders, an increase had been noticed in some villages in other districts of the state and security forces were keeping an eye on the situation. Giving details about BSF's social activities, he said the force organised regular medical camps, independently and in co-ordination with civil authorities, and provide medicare to many poor villagers.
