Beijing, Jan 08: China's tourism industry, badly-hit by the Sars epidemic last year, has registered a better than expected performance with earnings reaching around USD 60 billion, a top industry official said today. "Despite the impact of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), China's tourism industry performed well in 2003,” Director of China National Tourism Administration (CNTA), He Guangwei said.

Gross intenational and domestic tourism earnings reached around USD 60 billion, down 12.4 per cent compared to the previous year but were still better than expected, he was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.

To minimise the impact of SARS on the tourism sector, the Chinese government adopted a series of measures to support the industry, which provided good conditions for recovery, the report said.
Some 91 million inbound travellers visited China in 2003, 11.3 million of whom were foreigners. Foreign currency income reached USD 17.3 billion, down 15.1 per cent compared to the previous year, it said.

Domestic travellers amounted to 870 million (down by 0.9 per cent) and income reached USD 40 billion (down 11.2 per cent) over the previous year, the report said.
