Kapurthala (Punjab), June 23: Travelling in the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani Express will become more comfortable from August this year with the induction of new German-design high speed coaches which also have greater seating capacity. The first rake of 16 coaches, manufactured by the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here, were flagged off today by Member of Parliament from Jalandhar Balbir Singh.

Addressing a function later, railway board member (mechanical) S Dhasarethy said 80 per cent of the new coaches were indigenously built, bringing down the cost of each coach to Rs two crore as against Rs seven crore for the imported version.

Dhasarathy told reporters that the coaches were ready to be attached to the Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani but some adjustments had to made to the computerised reservation system as the new coaches had more seats.

RCF general manager M Sirajuddin said 32 such coaches had already been manufactured and another 160 would be built within this year.
He said the new coaches are longer, aesthetically-designed and have many advanced features such as wider windows for better panoramic view and controlled discharge toilet which become functional when the train attains a speed of 35 kmph.
