New York, June 20: The men's and women's champions at this year's US Open will each receive one million dollars, a first in grand slam history, the United States Tennis Association announced here yesterday. Total prize money at this year's final grand slam event will be 17.074 million dollars, the highest in any event in tennis history and a one million dollar (six per cent) increase over last year. Prize money in the singles main draw is eight per cent higher than last year. "The increase in prize money to record levels reaffirms our commitment to the top singles and doubles players in the world", said USTA president Alan Schwartz.
This is the 30th anniversary of the US Open becoming the first grand slam to offer equal prize money to both men and women.
