Salvation at 'Masaan'
This Neeraj Ghaywan directorial venture will take you back to the ghats of Banaras. The movie has justly depicted the taboos of the Indian society--Caste system and Sex. The ghats and local culture of the Shiv-nagari, Varanasi, is well-knitted in the flick.
Be someone's 'Raanjhanaa'
Raanjhanaa, as the name suggests depicts the childhood love of a local Banarasi lad. Dhanush, who essayed the role of a typical Banarasi boy, has very well portrayed his character. We also got to see the bylanes and ghats of Kashi city. The flick will definitely make you want to visit the Shiv-nagari and you could also experience the 'gali-mohalle wala pyaar'.
Eradicate the myth of 'Laaga Chunari Mein Daag'
This Pradeep Sarkar directorial venture showcased a typical middle-class family of the Shiv-nagari and how the daughters essayed by Rani Mukherjee and Konkona Sen Sharma grew up in the local region of Banaras. Again the movie left no stone unturned to showcase the charm of the ghat and bylanes of Kashi.
Fall in 'Isaaq'
Guess the filmmakers couldn't find a better location than Banaras to portray the Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Romeo & Juliet'. This Manish Tiwary's directorial venture has not only beautifully potrayed the story of the two love birds in a typical Banarasi style but also did justice in picturising the exquisite magic of the ghats and the feel of Kashi.
'Water' from the ghats of Banaras
A 2005 Canadian film written and directed by Deepa Mehta is set against the backgroud of the plight of widows in Varanasi. Set in 1938, the movie seeks to explore the lives of widows at an ashram. The film stars Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray and John Abraham in the leading roles. The movie garnered wide acclaim for its plot and performances from critics around the globe.
