There's a small but beautiful town in Ramanathpuram District of Tamil Nadu called Rameswaram. Yes, as the name signifies – the place is adorned with a lot of temples and is sure to rekindle your faith in Lord Rama and Ramayana. The greatest thing about this place from a traveler's point of view is its pure, scenic beauty, minus the commotion of city life.


Whether it is the serene, clean beaches, the colourful boats, utterly simplified life of the locals, or the less-crowded temples, Rameswaram promises to bring the traveler in you to a new front. Welcome these beauties with an open arm. Not to mention the fact that one of the char dhams in India is located here - Ramanathaswamy Temple.

Ramanathaswamy Temple:


Being one of the twelve Jyothirlinga temples, this beautiful temple was built in the 17th century. This place also has its significance in Ramayana. Lord Rama is believed to have prayed to Lord Shiva here. The deity inside is Ramathaswamy in the form of lingam. It is cited to be one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India.


Dhanushkodi Temple:


Perched on the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu, the temple stands as a ruin of the earlier temple as mentioned in the Ramayan. It is a must-visit place.


Gandhamadhana Parvatham


This place is the most serene and nonbelligerent of the places you would visit in this island town. Again, this place has significance in Ramayana. Gandhamadhana Parvatham is the mountain which was carried by Lord Hanuman to fetch medicines for Laxman.


Five Faced Hanuman Temple


Tucked away 2 km from Ramanathaswamy Temple, this Hanuman Temple is highly revered. It also has statues of Lord Rama, Laxman and Sita. This temple is revered for it is believed that it signifies five faces of Lord Hanuman in one. The temple also houses the floating stone which was used during Sethu Bandhanam.


Rama Setu (Adam's Bridge)


Also known as Adam's bridge, or Rama's bridge, this bridge made of us limestone shoals is believed to connect to the north western coast of Sri Lanka.


Pamban Beach


It is said to be India's first sea beach. This bridge connects the Rameswaram island with the mainland. The bridge was commissioned in 1914.


House of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam


This is the house where the former President of India lived. Turned as a museum in the year 2011 – this place gets a lot of visitors every year and inspires many. There is also a Kalam shop nearby which houses various products and items at cheap rates.


Villoondi Theertham


Hailed to be a holy water body, it is one of the sacred 64 theerthas. It is a beautiful and serene beach. There is a story in Ramayan associated with this place. According to the history, this theertham was made by Lord Rama to quench the thirst of Sita by dipping the bow in sea water.
