Mumbai, June 02: In a major information technology initiative, Maharashtra government would set up 50 "I-Setu" centres in the metropolis, providing on-line services to the citizens. "The pilot project in Mumbai, slated to begin from January 2004, will provide nearly 40 different services to citizens like on-line payments of electricity and telephone bills, filing of income-tax returns and various other services", official sources said here.
A decision regarding setting up of "I-Setu" centres across the metropolis was taken at a meeting, presided over by the Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde at Mantralaya.
Tata Infotech has conducted a feasibility study for setting up of "I-Setu" in the metropolis.
Shinde was informed that Maharashtra continued to hold numero uno position in e-governance while in the overall IT sector the state was leading along with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The findings have been quoted in a recent report prepared by the Union IT department, sources added.
The chief secretary Ajit Nimbalkar, IT secretary Mukesh Khullar and senior officials were present at the meeting, which also reviewed the progress of Maharashtra in the IT sector. Bureau Report
