July 20: World number one Lleyton Hewitt will miss the Mercedes Benz Cup in Los Angeles due to illness. The reigning US Open and Wimbledon champion withdrew from the tournament, which begins on Monday, after contracting a virus.
Since crashing out of the Australian Open in the first round, Hewitt has collect four titles in 2002, including California's San Jose and Indian Wells hardcourt events in March.

"Hopefully it is just a matter of days before Lleyton is ready to resume training and be back on tour," said Tom Ross, Hewitt's agent. Another Grand Slam event winner has also been forced to pull out of the hardcourt event.
Sweden's Thomas Johansson, the 2002 Australian Open winner, will miss the tournament due to a knee injury.
The loss of Hewitt and Johansson leaves Germany's Tommy Haas, defending champion Andre Agassi, Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean and Andy Roddick to battle for the title. Bureau Report
