New Delhi, Mar 12: Iraq has abruptly shunted out its ambassador to India Saleh al Mukhtar to Vietnam in the midst of a possible US attack on his country. The shifting of the ambassador follows the US blacklisting Indian company NEC Engineering Private Limited accusing it of illegally exporting dual use items to Iraq. The NEC is reported to have sent consignments of various chemical substances to Iraq, which Baghdad strongly denies. Mukhtar has also denied that he was involved in the deal. Mukhtar, who played an important role in projecting Iraq's image in India, tried his best to persuade his government to reconsider the decision, but failed, according to sources. He left India Wednesday afternoon.

The sudden departure of the Iraqi ambassador, who has not been replaced, surprised many diplomats here. They could not even arrange a get-together for him before Mukhtar left for Hanoi.

Usually the Arab League and the dean of the diplomatic corps arrange a farewell for an outgoing ambassador.

Mukhtar, who is closely associated with the ruling Baath party, was instrumental in enhancing economic cooperation between Iraq and India. During his tenure several Indian companies went to Iraq to do business.

Before leaving India, Mukhtar was summoned to Baghdad for consultations. His departure from India at this critical juncture has aroused curiosity in diplomatic circles.
