Unabated violence in Kanpur led to at least eight more fatalities taking the toll to 17 in three days of communal violence. An hour-long curfew relaxation in different areas of Kanpur city did not witness any breach of peace.` Five people were killed in violent incidents in various localities including Takia Park(Sisamau), Humayun Bagh and Chamanganj and three others could not be saved from grievous injuries suffered, on Saturday, a police spokesman told UNI.

Kanpur divisional commissioner V K Malhotra confirmed the death of 12 persons so far but unofficial sources put the figure at 20. Indefinite curfew in other localities spreading over nine police station areas continued for the third successive day, on Sunday without any relaxation. Taking serious note of communal flare up in the city, the Uttar Pradesh government, on Saturday, replaced the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police.
The trouble erupted on Friday when activists of Students Islamic Movement in India tried to burn an effigy of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to protest alleged burning of a copy of Quran. Bureau Report
