New Delhi, June 13: National Commission for Women (NCW) has embarked on an ambitious project of compiling state-wise reports on the status of the women in the country. "The Commission has decided to bring out at least reports of 20 states regarding the status of the women," NCW chairperson Purnima Advani told a news agency here today. She said the Commission has already visited a few states including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala to gather first-hand information for the project.
"We hold open meetings with the NGOs and activists for which we issue a public notice so that all the interested parties can come forward for the meeting," Advani said, adding during the meetings besides discussing various issues concerning women including the problems faced by the women of that region, the commission also gather information about the status of women there. She said while most of the problems and concerns highlighted by these NGOs and activists are taken up with the administration immediately, the NCW compiles views and data reflecting the status of the women in that particular region.

Asked what was the time-frame during which she thinks the project will be completed, Advani said, "It might take a year or so. But we will make all efforts to complete it as soon as possible."

The reports will also carry the recommendations, if required, for the elevation of the status of women for the state governments, she added.
