New Delhi, Oct 21: Medical Council of India has decided to recommend to the central government derecognition of five medical colleges in Madhya Pradesh for alleged failure to maintain standards and upgrading equipment despite repeated directions from the body, sources in the MCI said.
The decision was taken yesterday at the annual general body meeting of MCI here, the sources said.
All the five are government medical colleges and have a total strength of 620 students. The meeting was also attended by a state government nominee, they said adding MCI had inspected the colleges in 1998 and asked them to upgrade in terms of equipment and manpower.
"Letters had been written to these medical colleges and even the chief minister," the sources said adding that one of the reason for inaction could be frequent change in health officials dealing with the matter in the state.

As per law, MCI reviews the status of medical colleges every five years. Despite repeated directions, these medical colleges did not take any initiative to upgrade, they said.
