Bhubaneswar, Sept 04: Flood relief operations in Orissa have been affected as the state has exhausted the stock of flattened rice -- locally known as Chidwa-- distributed as food along with jaggery during calamities. "Our stock has been exhausted and we are procuring more chidwa from West Midnapur district of neighbouring West Bengal", the Special Relief Commissioner, R Balakrishnan said.
The district collector of Balasore had been entrusted with the procurement and supply of the item, he said. The official admitted that in the absence of chidwa now, plain rice was being provided to the flood victims which they were not willing to accept.
The administration had already distributed over 583 metric tonnes of chidwa among the flood affected people in the districts of Cuttack, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Khurda. Though the government had initially declared that relief would be provided for three days, it was subsequently increased to seven days after the flood situation worsened.
Balakrishnan said that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had spoken to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Ram Naik requesting him to provide 10,000 kilo litres of kerosene oil for distribution in the flood hit areas.
